Houston, Here We Come

This is our last official weekend as Austinites. It feels weird knowing that next weekend, we'll be Houstonians. When I was about 18 years old, I used to think I'd move anywhere other than Houston. I'm not sure why I felt that way. All I knew about Houston was that it was big and my mom used to live there when she was younger. I had only been to Houston a few times before Matt started interning for ExxonMobil and I spent every other weekend there. Here are the few things I've learned/realized about Houston:

1. Driving in Houston makes me want to crap my pants. Six lanes = scary.

2. There are more jobs in Houston than in Austin. But, there are also a lot more people vying for those jobs.

3. Thrifting is waaaaay better in Houston.

4. No allergies in Houston. I hope.

5. We'll be close to a beach again!

6. There are food options other than Tex-Mex. Say what?!

7. Our neighborhood will not be overrun with college students. In fact, it's very quiet and quaint.

8. Austin definitely influenced my style for the better and I'm excited to see what Houston does for me.

9. There's an H&M in Houston. Enough said.

10. Starting a new life in a new city is always exciting.

Now that I think about it, I listed more good than bad things about Houston. That's definitely a good sign!

A Whole Lotta Leg

It feels like it's been sweltering hot FOREVER, rather than just a few weeks. I've been wearing as little clothing as possible when I'm not at work. On Sunday, I decided to dress up my never-nudes (Arrested Development, anyone?) with a bright pink blouse and my new favorite wedges.

Have I mentioned that I got these shoes for free? I entered my name in a giveaway that Kate from O My Heart! was hosting a few weeks ago. I entered halfheartedly because I never win anything, so you can imagine my surprise when she emailed and told me I won. Needless to say, I've worn then almost every day since I got them. They go with everything, including my never-nudes!

I've been trying my hardest to "shop" my own closet and use what I have to create new outfits. This is one of those attempts. I've had all the pieces of this outfit for awhile, but have never worn them all together before. I really like the result. If you ever feel like you don't have anything to wear (let's face it, it happens more than you'd like to admit), have a few drinks and spend the evening putting outfits together. Maybe you don't need the drinks, but a little alcohol always gets my creative juices flowing. The point is to mix and match pieces that you wouldn't normally wear together. I try to do this at least once a month and always end up with tons of great outfit ideas. I've got about five outfits, including this one, waiting to be worn from my recent "dress up" session.

In more exciting news, I'm officially done at the bridal salon! I am beyond relieved to be done with that part of my life and looking forward to upcoming changes. In fact, I start training for my new month-long job at Texas Monthly today. Wish me luck!

We're Back!

The title isn't referring to that awesome movie about dinosaurs from my childhood, in case you were wondering. Instead, "we"refers to my awesome pants. I found them at the vintage store where I used to work, hiding among the random items in the racks. Even though they probably used to belong to an elderly woman who wore them with a matching blouse and white orthopedic shoes, I love them all the same. They've been sitting in my closet, unworn, since last summer and I was so excited to break them out. It's like wearing pajamas!

I haven't worn these shoes since last summer, either. After wearing them with this outfit, I accidently left them at my best friend's apartment. It was pouring rain that evening and I didn't want to slip in the parking lot, so I wore flip-flops to walk to my car and forgot my wedges. Hopefully, I'll get them back soon and you'll see more of them than you can stand!

Little Red Dress

Summer is officially over, classes are in full swing...and I just want to go back to sleep.

Even though I'm not as pumped about school as I should be, I'm excited to work on my blog again. I've been pretty lazy these last few weeks, spending hours reading the Stephanie Plum series and watching Madmen. Neither of those activities required me to get dressed, so that's my excuse for lack of outfit posts this month.

Now that I have to be somewhere everyday, my summer uniform of denim cutoffs & t-shirts is not OK anymore. I don't feel very confident if I don't think I look my best. It's obviously a psychological thing, but it works for me.

Last Wednesday, I wore a vintage dress and belt from estate sales in San Antonio, Forever 21 earrings, and Sam Edelman sandals.

Hello Again

  

You may have noticed that I've been MIA for about two weeks now. I didn't mean to do that. It just sort of happened when I moved and AT&T screwed up my internet order.

We won't have internet in our apartment until September 2. I can't blog, do any school stuff, or Facebook stalk. I already tried to get an earlier installation date, but haven't had any luck. It looks like my blogging will continue to be on a hiatus until September. Once I get a new tripod and the internet installed, I plan to try out a few different blog ideas I've been thinking about.

By the way, I'm writing this post at Matt's apartment in Baytown. I'm helping him pack up his stuff for the move back to Austin. Matt and I will officially be living together this Thursday!

New Apartment & New Dress

I hope you've grown tired of the same boring white brick background because this is the last time you'll ever see it. I've officially moved into my new place! Now, I have to find a new location to take my outfit pictures. My main concerns are usually lighting and nosy people hanging around. OK, so they probably aren't being nosy, but it feels silly to pose and smile while people are watching. I guess it's safe to say that my modeling career is over before it even began.

I picked this dress up during a quick trip to Savers last week. I hadn't bought anything in awhile and was itching for something new to wear. Well, this dress isn't exactly new because it's from a thrift store, but it only cost $7. It was exactly what I was looking for: something light and comfortable enough to wear in 100° weather. You can't see it in these pictures, but there's a slit in the front that goes up to my knees. I love maxi dresses but "I like a healthy breeze 'round my privates, thanks."

Haha. That was one of my favorite lines from Harry Potter. All right, enough nerdiness.

On Friday, I wore an Ann Taylor dress from Savers, a necklace I bought at Sears when I worked at the jewelry counter in high school, and Forever 21 sandals.

Pajama Party

Like most summers usually go, I only get dressed on the days I have to go to work. I'm only working part-time, so that means I'm spending all that other time in my pajamas. I forgot how much I love doing that. Of course, I enjoy getting dressed up and looking cute, but there's something very satisfying about being cozy all day long. It's a good thing classes start in less than a month because I need a reason to get dressed everyday.

Even though I don't work today, I got dressed right when I woke up because I was freaked out about my recent laziness. I can't let it become a habit or I might even start wearing pajamas to class.

Lazy Summer

I can't believe how much I've been neglecting my blog lately. I'm trying to live up the last few weeks of summer and stopping to take outfit photos hasn't really been a priority. But seriously, it only takes 10 minutes to get a couple of good pictures. And then another 30 minutes, give or take, to edit them and write up a post. It's not that hard, but for some reason, I'd rather spend that hour reading or sleeping. Or watching I Love Lucy, which I've been doing a lot of since I discovered a bunch of episodes to watch online for free.

Now, instead of doing something fun, I have to get packing. I move to my new apartment this Friday! Hopefully after I'm settled, I'll be back to blogging on a regular basis.

Hot Child in the City

My one and only vacation this summer is officially over. My best friend, Jackie, and I spent a couple of days in Washington D.C. visiting her brother and my sister. We were even able to squeeze in a 24-hour trip to NYC. I forgot how much I love that city. After spending just one day there, my long-time desire to move there has been rekindled.

It was my first time visiting D.C., so I was really excited. I was surprised at how much hotter it was than Austin. It was so humid, it felt like walking through a swamp. There was a film of sweat on my face anytime we were outside, so I didn't take pictures of every single outfit I wore. Thanks to Jackie reminding me, I was able to capture a few.

This was taken in the Union Station right after our arrival in D.C. I wore a Gap tank top, a thrifted skirt from Goodwill, a belt from Wish (now closed), and Bakers sandals.

Jackie and I went to the Smithsonian National Zoo while our siblings worked on Monday. I wore a vintage men's shirt from Cream Vintage, thrifted men's Levis made into cutoffs, and Bakers sandals.

In retrospect, I probably should have worn a tank top. Or at least something not made of polyester. Thankfully, they had misters!

This was right before our departure to the airport for our flight home. I couldn't miss my last chance to pose in front of Jackie's brother's very cool three-story row house. I wore a Forever 21 dress and necklace, a belt from Wish, and Bakers sandals.

I had such a wonderful time in D.C. I can't wait to go back and see everything I missed. Now that my vacation is over, I'm looking forward to moving into my new apartment. I suppose I have my last semester as a UT Austin undergrad to look forward to as well, but I have no idea how I'm paying for it. My financial aid is still up in the air, but I'm not letting it bring me down. I've still got two weeks until it's time to panic!

Lucy, I'm Home!

 

 

If you don't already know it, I Love Lucy is my absolute favorite TV show. I used to watch it with my grandma when I was little and I guess I never grew out of it. I'm pretty sure I've seen every single episode multiple times. I never get tired of laughing at Lucy while she's doing something ridiculous or watching Ricky Ricardo bang away Babalu on his bongo.

This dress makes me feel like Lucy. Fortunately, I didn't get caught up in some crazy scheme while wearing it. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind being Lucy next Halloween. All I need is a red wig and an apron!

On Saturday, I wore a dress from Cream Vintage, a belt from Wish (now closed) and shoes from Family Thrift Center.

Big Bird or Bumble Bee?

I freaking love this blouse. Unfortunately, my camera is unable to capture exactly how awesome it is. It's bright mustard with tiny black polka dots all over and huge, billowy sleeves that kind of feel like wings when I flap my arms. No, of course I didn't take five different flapping shots before I realized I looked absolutely ridiculous.

I took 10. And as you can see here, none of them made the cut. 

On Thursday, I wore a vintage Liz Claiborne blouse that my step-mom, Rose, bought for me at an estate sale in San Antonio, an American Apparel skirt, a belt from Goodwill, and DV Dolce Vita booties from Nordstrom.
